Why White Roofs
Roofs are exposed to the suns rays from sunrise to sunset. Most roofs in North America are asphalt based roofs where the final coating is a thin layer of bitumen, then protected by a layer of coarse mineral aggregate or gravel. The gravel is applied to protect the roof against harmful UV rays, but over time wind will blow off the gravel thus exposing the roof to the elements. The exposed bitumen will dry-out and crack and finally fail, costing the owner thousands of dollars to replace.
The average temperature of a dark roof in Canada can be as high as 230 degs. F or 110 degs. C. The differance in temperature from day to night can cause thermal movements thus accelerating the degradation of the bitumen.
Color has a large effect on a surface by absorbing or not absorbing solar rays. White colors absorb about 40% while dark ones absorb about 90%. The average temperature white roof is 130 degs. F or 54 degs. C, compared to a dark one at 230 degs. F or 110 degs. C. a difference of 100 degs. F or 56 degs. C
